Their are mainly three business modes that agencies generally use

  • pay per hour
  • Monthly retainer
  • Percentage on ad spend

when you are just starting our, you should always go for monthly retainer because it is much more secure and you are not experience enough to come up with a cost of your services. Once you get enough experience with working with two to four clients, then you can move towards other business models as well. But initially we recommend you to choose monthly retainer. That means you will charge a specific amount on the monthly basis for the services that you offer to your clients.

Step 6: Have a Social Media Presence

Having a social media presence is really important nowadays. But it is not recommended in the beginning when you are just starting out.

How to get your first paying client?

Step 1: Marketing

  • Create your website
  • Create a velfie talking about your agency and your services
  • Upload it as a story on your WhatsApp, Facebook and insta account with a swipe up link to your website
  • Ask your friends, relatives and family members to do the same.
  • Do a broadcast message of the velfie with a text on WhatsApp
  • DM your friends on facebook, insta and LinkedIn and request for promotion

Step 2: List building

  • Make a list of businesses that your family members and relatives are doing, from close relation to long relation
  • Make a list of businesses that your friends are doing

Even if they have a small shop or grocery store, make a list of them

Step 3: Find more leads

Ask your friends and family members, if they know anyone doing business and in need of digital marketing services. As you already message this is a kind of follow up, where you are asking anybody who need a digital marketing service.

Step 4: Make more leads

  • Go to a business listing website like or and make a list of your potential customers
  • These business listing websites charges up-to 100$ for top listings. The companies or local businesses that are paying that much about for their marketing can become your client as well.
  • So make sure to make a list of all of them.
  • Go to google and type your target keywords with location, then make a list of them as well.

Note: Don’t make a list from free business listing websites because the company you found their may not be convert into your clients. To get your first paying client you need to target businesses that are already spending some money for their marketing.

Step 5: Compiling the list

You have to Compile all the list in one excel sheet and segregate them based on different sources, List of friends and family members businesses, Acquaintance, Local alliance group, List from google and business listing websites.

By then, you should have a list of at least 100 leads from the above sources. Now you have to approach them based on your connections.

Step 6: Approaching your leads

We have to approach the leads based on our connections. But before we approach them, we have to make sure some basic things to improve the conversion rate.

Tip: Create a local alliance with your local businesses owners, vendors and suppliers if you can.

For example, Let’s say that your target clients are the owners of the restaurants and coffee shops of your local area. Before you approach them, you have to find the top supplier of that particular product that your target clients are using.

So if you are targeting all the organic restaurants of your area, then you first have to find out the top suppliers of organic fruits and vegetable in my local area. Because that supplier is going to supply his fruits and vegetable to all the restaurant of your area.

Now what you have to do is, create a one page website for these vendors. And you have to do it for free.

You can say that,

I am gonna create a free website for you and in return, you have to give me a referral. You have to introduce me to one of your clients. If I close the deal, I am gonna give you a small percentage of my profit“.

That way you can create a referral network for yourself. You can get your first 3 to 5 clients initially with these referral networks. It will also help you to build trust with your clients which is really important for any marketing agency.

Best order to approach the leads ?

  • We have to approach our friends and family first. Since you know them already, you don’t have to push too much for converting them. You will also feel confident and comfortable by approaching them. That’s why I suggest you to approach them first.
  • Then we have to approach the leads that we have generated via referral network. Once you approach your friends and family members, you may have got some ideas about how to approach a lead, how to present your idea in a very easy way and how to close the deal with them.
  • Last but not least, we are going to approach the leads that we have generated via internet and other business listing websites.

Since you just started your digital marketing agency, you may have to face lots of difficulties to convert your leads into your clients. They may ask you about your previous experience, they may negotiate on your pricing and they may refuse to give you the work. Then what you have to do is, you have to ask them for a meeting, or a presentation meeting where you will share your blueprint on how you will help their businesses to get more clients and how you can help them to get more sales.

How to pitch your marketing blueprint to your Leads?

You have to prepare this part by yourself. But we will give you a blueprint on how you can do it.

  • Do they have claimed their username in FB
  • Does cover page conveys their brand message
  • DP or cover page is properly optimised or not?
  • Is their about section complete [ Email, Contact, Website link etc] These information helps audience to keep in touch
  • If you client have a physical store, then did they have mentioned their opening hour in their page.
  • If it is a restaurant, do they have their menu updated.
  • What is their response rate.
  • Do they reply to comments, reviews and recommendations.

Mention all the things in the audit report.

Mention all the points that are given below into your audit report

  • Do they have a branded profile picture
  • Is their website listed on their profile
  • Are they using business profile or not
  • Do they have story highlight section properly optimized or not
  • How many hashtags are they using [ Minimum25/Post]
  • Are they using relevant hashtags
  • Are they posting interesting/entertaining and informative content
  • Are they using local hashtags in their post
  • Are they talking to others/their audience? Are they engaged with them?
  • Are they posting stories and posts daily (It’s a Must)
  • If it’s a restaurant, are they engaging with people geotagging them

  • Search your client’s business name on google and find out all the negative reviews and conversations
  • Take it’s screenshot and add it into your report
  • You can also use the reviews of any third party website as well.

Remember that this is the first thing that your lead is going to see from you. You have to use this chance to convert your lead into your paying client.

Close the Deal

Here comes the final part. You have already generated lots of audit data for your client. But what if the client doesn’t get converted. That will be a nightmare, right?

Even if the lead doesn’t get converted after your first presentation, don’t worry. Just give them a copy of the audit report that you’ve created. Maybe they need more time to think. Maybe they want to analyze the report you have created. The reason could be anything. You have to keep you patience.

You have to look towards the other leads as well. After doing all these research on creating audit report for your client, you may have got a lot of experience. Make sure to keep a record of your first meeting, auditing report and presentations. And try to improve it as much as you can. That’s the key to succeed in this online world.

Do you want to master the art of Marketing? You must have to know the basics and Fundamentals first. In this article I will try to give you an idea about how you can master the art of Marketing. I will share some of my own life examples that will help you to understand the concepts and help you to apply them as well. If you are a freelancer, student or want to learn digital marketing then this article is only for you.


What is Marketing? The simplest explanation

Marketing refers to activities a company undertakes to promote the buying or selling of a product or service. Marketing includes advertising, selling, and delivering products to consumers or other businesses.

The ultimate purpose of marketing is to build a brand and capture a position in the minds of the customers. Marketing is a game of perceptions. Product is rooted in reality. Never let marketing become more important then a product. A great product sells itself. 

Why Learn & Master Marketing?

If you know how to market and sell, you have a very safe carrier. Marketing is the most valuable investment in a business because it gives direct returns. Everything else like production, manufacturing,  HR, accounting is an expense that does not give immediate ROI.

Marketing is based on science, not on creativity. Marketing education has a long shelf life because it is rooted in human psychology and understanding the market. 

Marketing is a catalyst of any business. If implemented strategically, then it can increase the growth rate of a business. And if implemented without understanding the customer behaviour, then it can destroy the entire growth of a business.

Fundamentals of Marketing:-

I personally believe that these three are the fundamentals of marketing.

1) Networking: This is a very important part of marketing. I will try to teach it with my own example. 

I have a YouTube channel name as Hostography. Recently I made a review video on (Coursevania) This is a coupon & deals website that provides coupons and promo codes trough which you can get Udemy’s premium courses for free.

Then I shared this video with the owner of the website. Recently they had a problem with their coupon codes. So I offer them that I can make a solution video for them. They agreed and I made a video for them.

They had a telegram channel with over 125k members. So it was a great opportunity to get so many new viewers and subscribers for me. I made a solution video and shared it with them. They shared my video on their telegram channel. 

Brand promotion

That way, they got a solution video for themselves and I got so many new viewers for my channel. 

It was a win win situation for us. 

I was able to make this happen because I have a connection with the admin of that website.

That’s why I called Networking a very important part of marketing.

2) Communication skills: Good marketing is all about great communication. Good communication does not mean sophisticated English . Good communication does not care about vocabulary or grammar. ‘Am I able to deliver my thoughts to the customer is the effectively?’ is the question to ask.

       Take an example of the above example. I chat with the website owner and deliver my offer effectively, that is why I was able to promote my video. I had only 5000+ subscribers and he had more 25X subscribers then me. But I convinced him and he promoted my video in his telegram channel.

That’s the importance of communication in Marketing.


Tips to improve your communication skills:- 

1) Write like you talk. Join a conversation in people’s mind. Try to understand the behaviour and mindset of your target audience first.

2) The more you write, the better you can write (and also speak). Writing slows down your thought process and gives you more clarity. A good writer can become a better communicator because he developers the ability to express his thought in a better way among his listener.

3) Watch conversational English shows. I used to watch Anime with English dubbed.

4) Think in English. This will be helpful for you in long term.

5) Practice as much as you can. Implement whatever you learned.

3) Personal brand: A personal brand becomes an influencer and a brand ambassador for the companies that they run. 

Since marketing is the most important process of a business that’s why it can not be outsourced to a marketing agency. That’s why their must be some people available in the leadership of an organisation that have a strong personal brand.

Because people want to hear from people , not from the brand. so it is more important to build a personal brand. The best known will always beat the best.

1) Elon Musk has a bigger following and reach than SpaceX and Tesla in twitter.

2) Sheryl Sandberg – COO of Facebook, has a strong personal brand.

3) Richard Branson also has a strong personal brand. 

Upside: A personal brand can give rise to many brands through his influence. Elon Musk is a perfect example of this. If you know Elon Musk then we don’t need to explain about it.

Downside: A personal brand can not be invested in & can not be sold.

  • Learn:-  You have to learn new skills through concepts, facts, procedures and experiments. Understand the concepts, remember the facts, practice the procedures and do experiments.
  • Work:- Once you learn a new skill, put your new found skills to work. Go from practice to implementation. Implementing your knowledge in the real world will give you better understanding. You can do freelancing for your clients, or make your own projects as well.
  • Blog:- Write about what you have learned and experienced through your work . When you write what you have learned, your concepts get clear and you get a deep understanding about the concepts. Along with your blog, start building your personal brand as well.
  • Consult:- Now that you have a personal brand through your blog, have work experience and you have learned the fundamentals, start consulting other businesses instead for working for them. You will suggest what a company or organization can do to get better.
  • Mentor:- Mentor others who want to become like you. Mentoring will help you scale your understanding to a whole new level. Mentoring is completely a new experience. You will get to see how your knowledge and experience will help others.
  • Start-up:– Start your own product or service business with the understanding that you have developed about the market, the problems and your skills. That way you reach out to the new level.

Traditional Marketing vs Digital Marketing

Traditional Marketing :-      

Traditional marketing refers to a form of promotion that reaches wide range of audience. Companies use marketing channels such as print, broadcast, telemarketing, TV ads or direct mail to engage their audience and broaden their reach. 

Advantages of Traditional Marketing:-

  1. If a product is generic with a very wide targeting- TV ads can reach millions at low cost. For (example- Mobile phone ads)
  2. If we talk about India, out of 298 million homes , 197 million homes have TV  in their homes. With an average of 3 to 4 members per household, TV has a reach of 800 million to 1 billion people. The reach of digital marketing is nowhere close to TV based on numbers alone. ( Source- Wikipedia)
  3. If a company is selling low consumer grade products, then Traditional marketing is the best option. 
  4. Traditional marketing is the best way to reach millions of people and build brand awareness.

Disadvantages of Traditional Marketing:-

  1. Traditional marketing can be used for brand awareness, but we can not track it.
  2. Lead generation is tough in traditional marketing as compare to digital marketing.
  3. We can not do deep marketing and natural sales using traditional marketing.
  4. We can not personalize to communication in traditional marketing.

Digital marketing:- 

Digital marketing, also called online marketing, is the promotion of brands to connect with potential customers using the internet and other forms of digital communication. This includes not only email, social media, and web-based advertising, but also text and multimedia messages as a marketing channel. Essentially, if a marketing campaign involves digital communication, it’s digital marketing.

Advantages of Digital Marketing :-

  1. Digital Marketing is the best way to reach out your target customers at a very low cost.
  2. Unlike traditional marketing, we can track our marketing campaigns and generate more leads.
  3. we can convert more leads into customers by retargeting them via email, facebook ads or google ads.
  4. We can do personalize communication to our customers using digital marketing. 
  5. We can do deep marketing and generate natural sales. 
  6. There are lots of digital marketing tools available through which an individual can easily operate and do digital marketing.

Disadvantages of Digital Marketing:-

  1. Without proper guidance, Digital marketing is really difficult skill to learn and implement.
  2. Since you can target global audience via digital marketing, you also have to compete with lots of digital marketing.
  3. You have to be very careful about your customers. Your only one mistake or a bad customer review can destroy your entire brand.
  4. There are a number of legal considerations around collecting and using customer data for digital marketing purposes.
